IGV Server Outage - What happened yesterday

To all of our hosting customers,

We sincerely apologize for the trouble yesterday’s network outage may have caused you. We want you to know that we understand the frustration this has caused. The network is back up and running as of 12:55 p.m. yesterday. In case you have not had a chance to check our Facebook page for updates on yesterday’s outage, here is what happened:

At 4 am Thursday morning, a fiber optic cable leading to our data center in Cedar Falls, Iowa was damaged causing a massive outage. Our main line got hit with a massive hail/lightning storm Wednesday night that brought it down. Our data center has backup lines in case something like this were to ever happen and we were utilizing them until a local arsonist took out the backup lines (in town) with his 5 building fire spree early Thursday morning.

This outage prevented access to websites on our servers and email delivery. Emails that were sent during the outage queued up on the sending server and were then delivered once the server became accessible. Our data center technicians are working with the network service provider to repair the damaged fiber. Currently, we're on an emergency connection from the local Municipal ISP (CFU) right now while the other lines are repaired.  This was a nationwide outage affecting other hosting companies as well as ISPs like Qwest and CenturyLink.

Once again, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this network outage has caused you. If you have any further questions, please contact me at 330-425-0922 x 112.

Sincerely,

Karen A. Leonard
